Grand West es un enorme centro de ocio del Grupo Sun International cerca de Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica. El corazón del complejo de estilo victoriano es el casino: 2.500 rutilantes tragaperras y 68 mesas de juego con, entre otros, blackjack, poker o ruleta americana, se ocupan de proporcionar genuina diversión lúdica al máximo nivel. El casino, como toda la instalación, es un reflejo de la histórica Ciudad del Cabo.

El casino está rodeado por numerosos bares, bistrós y restaurantes que satisfacen todos los gustos como, por ejemplo, un local de jazz periódicamente amenizado con música en directo. Un cine, una magnífica instalación de Superbowl y dos pistas para patinar redondean la oferta. Las familias con niños también son bienvenidos en el Grand West, ya que los pequeños disponen de un parque inspirado en el Fort of Good Hope del año 1652. Carruseles, minigolf, una montaña rusa y un barco grande que puede ser abordado por los niños, evitan cualquier tipo de aburrimiento. Tecnología en el transcurso del tiempo
La seguridad de los clientes en todo el complejo de ocio y en el casino ha sido siempre una prioridad, por lo que ya desde la solemne inauguración en el año 2000 está en funcionamiento un sistema de videovigilancia. Pero el sistema originariamente instalado no cumplía ya con las altas exigencias de los responsables de seguridad. Durante mucho tiempo, se utilizaron grabadores analógicos que grababan en cintas VHS. El sistema requería mucho mantenimiento, las piezas de desgaste tenían que ser renovadas periódicamente y las cintas VHS debían ser cambiadas manualmente en cuanto la cinta magnética estaba llena. Si el casino quería recuperar secuencias de imágenes relevantes para fines de investigación, la búsqueda resultaba a menudo muy laboriosa y larga: las cintas de vídeo tenían que ser revisadas una por una hasta encontrar la secuencia deseada. Debido a su frecuente inspección, la calidad de las cintas empeoraba cada vez más requiriendo así su recambio repetidamente.

Por esa razón, los responsables de seguridad decidieron cambiar a la grabación digital. Exigieron una matriz digital para la reproducción, mientras que deseaban continuar usando la matriz analógica existente para la visualización de las imágenes en vivo; había que crear una solución híbrida. Los requerimientos para otros aspectos del nuevo sistema también fueron claramente definidos: una grabación fiable con la máxima disponibilidad posible e imágenes de alta calidad que suministraran medios de prueba detallados e incuestionables en caso de emergencia.

Finalmente, cuando llegó el momento de elegir los productos apropiados, el experto en CCTV/IP de Regensburg Dallmeier salió triunfante. El Grupo Sun International ya había tenido buenas experiencias con la empresa alemana en el Golden Valley Casino.

Grabación con una disponibilidad del 99,99994%
Jaco Coetzee, Director for Gaming Compliance and Tables en Sun International, explica: “Principalmente, la alta disponibilidad y la fiabilidad del sistema fueron las razones decisivas para optar por Dallmeier.”

Gracias a una tecnología sofisticada y a una inteligente estructura modular, el sistema de vídeo de Dallmeier alcanza una disponibilidad del 99,99994%. Ello es posible mediante el almacenamiento de datos directamente en el codificador, el DIS-2/M. De este modo, la grabación es independiente de la red y se mantiene intacta incluso en caso de caída completa de la red.

El DIS-2/M es un codificador de vídeo y audio de un canal, diseñado para su montaje y funcionamiento en un módulo rack de 19”. El sistema es muy cómodo en su utilización y mantenimiento: En caso de avería es posible cambiar un componente defectuoso canal por canal. Este cambio puede ser realizado durante el funcionamiento del sistema gracias a la capacidad HotPlug de los módulos, reduciendo de esta manera el tiempo de inactividad (downtime) al mínimo. En total, más de 900 canales con una capacidad de almacenamiento total de más de 500TB están operando en el Grand West Casino.

Gestión fácil y cómoda
Para el control y la gestión del sistema de CCTV fueron instaladas en total 22 estaciones de operadores. Quince de estos puestos de trabajo están equipados con una PView Station PVS IV Plus, una estación autónoma de evaluación y gestión para grabadores de Dallmeier. Su potente CPU Intel Core2Duo permite una visualización de vídeo fluida con una alta calidad de imagen en hasta 14 splits independientes.

En los otros siete puestos de trabajo está instalado el Security Management System SeMSy^®, que permite un control eficiente de la instalación completa. Ofrece, entre otras cosas, una interfaz gráfica de usuario fácil de manejar y la posibilidad de integrar planos para una selección intuitiva de cámaras.

Slot machines, roulette tables and entertainment premises – the offer at the Grand West Casino near Cape Town leaves nothing to be desired. The Grand West, which is part of the Sun International Group, is the largest casino in South Africa and now also relies on video security technology from Dallmeier. It thereby follows the Golden Valley Casino which is already operating with a solution by the German manufacturer.

Grand West is a huge entertainment hub close to Cape Town in South Africa operated by the Sun International Group. The heart of the Victorian style complex is the casino building. 2,500 glitzy slot machines and 68 gaming tables – among others BlackJack, Poker, American Roulette – provide for undiluted joy of gambling at the highest stage. As with the whole facility the casino itself is designed to reflect the history of Cape Town.

The casino is surrounded by a variety of bars, bistros and restaurants, which cater for all tastes. There is, for instance, a jazz venue which offers live music on a regular basis. A cinema, a spectacular Super Bowl facility and two Ice Rinks round off the offer.

Families with kids are also welcome at the Grand West, for the small have an entire park at their disposal, which is modelled on the Fort of Good Hope dating from the year 1652. Finally, two hotels, the Cape Dutch City Lodge hotel and the Grand Hotel, provide convenient overnight accommodation close to the casino.

Technology in the course of time
The security of the guests across the entire entertainment complex and surveillance in the casino have always been a top priority, which is why the casino has been operating a video surveillance system ever since its formal opening in 2000. Meanwhile though, the originally used system no longer met the high requirements of the security personnel. For a long time, analogue recorders which recorded on VHS cassettes were used. The system was a high-maintenance installation, wear and tear parts had to be exchanged regularly and the VHS cassettes needed to be changed by hand once the magnetic tape was full.

Whenever the casino wanted to retrieve relevant image sequences for research purposes, the search was usually very laborious and time-consuming. The individual video cassettes had to be looked at one by one until the required sequence was found. Through the frequent viewing the quality of the tapes became ever worse, which meant that they often had to be exchanged.

The management thus decided to switch to digital recording. Thereby, a digital matrix was to be used for playback, while the existing analogue matrix was to be further used for displaying the live images. In order to realise this a hybrid solution had to be created. The requirements for the new system were also clearly defined for all other aspects of application: a reliable recording with highest possible availability and high-quality images which would provide detailed and clear evidence in a case of emergency.

When it came to choosing the suitable products, Regensburg based CCTV/IP expert Dallmeier came out on top. Sun International Group has already made positive experience with the German company during the installation work at the Golden Valley Casino.

Recording with 99.99994% availability
Jaco Coetzee, who is the Director for Gaming Compliance and Tables at Sun International, explains: “Particularly the high availability and reliability of the system were main reasons for our decision to choose Dallmeier.”

Thanks to a sophisticated technology and intelligent structure (modular concept) the Dallmeier video system achieves an availability of 99.99994%. This is made possible by storing the data directly at the encoder, the DIS-2/M. Therefore, recording is network-independent, which means it remains intact even in the case of disturbances or a complete network failure.

The DIS-2/M is a one channel audio and video encoder, designed for the installation and operation in a 19” module rack. The system is highly service- and maintenance friendly. If a disruption occurs, the defective components can be replaced channel by channel. Owing to the HotPlug functionality of the modules the exchange can be carried out during operation, thus reducing downtime to a minimum. All in all, more than 900 channels with a total storage capacity of over 500TB are operated at the Grand West Casino.

User-friendly management
In order to facilitate total control and administration of the CCTV system, a total of 22 operator stations were installed. Fifteen of these workplaces are equipped with a PView Station PVS IV Plus, a stand-alone evaluation and management station for Dallmeier recorders. Its high-performance CPU allows for a judder-free video display at high image quality in up to 14 independent splits.

The other seven workstations are equipped with the security management system SeMSy^®, which facilitates an efficient control of the complete installation. For example it offers, among other things, an easy to use graphic user interface and the possibility to integrate site plans to allow for an intuitive camera selection.
